Logistics sector needs additional staffing 11.7 million by year 2022


The logistics industry in rapid growth requires additional staff 11.7 million by 2022, says a report by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). The logistics industry, transport, storage and packaging, which currently employs more than 16.74 million employees, is expected to employ more than 28.4 million workers in 2022, the report said.The rapid growth of e-commerce sector, the increase in income levels between consumers, pushing on dedicated freight corridors and 100 per cent FDI through automatic route in warehousing, among others, will boost growth in the logistics sector, the report of the NSDC.

The report notes that the outsourced logistics business is currently growing at 52 percent.
Dilip Chenoy, MD and CEO of NSDC, said that the biggest challenge for the sector is to attract talent. "The industry clearly seen poor working conditions and pay scales down over other career options because of poor or non-existent policies labor," he said.

"With the more organized approach to the transport and logistics activities due to the emergence of global players of third party logistics, is expected to demand for skilled employees with specific skills to increase again," at -he adds.

The report identifies Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, Surat and Indore to emerge growth clusters as high in the logistics sector.

A KPMG report had earlier said that the introduction of goods and services tax will "trigger a new logistics infrastructure development era and taking investment to the next level."

Separately, NSDC in a recent report said that the banking sector, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector is likely to generate over 10 lakh additional jobs between 2017 and 2022.
